In our complex, automated, and sometimes fragmented world, the human touch is missing. For the first time in modern American history, we have been ordered to be quarantined, keep our distance, and avoid contact with others. After a week, most people were challenged and unaccustomed to live restricted lives without social interaction. It has given us time to examine ourselves and our world without the interruption of everyday life as we once knew it. As a society, we now know that relationships matter more than ever.
Right now, we are having our life re-framed, yet I’d still like to bring awareness to the serious issue of brain injuries. My inspiring story is that of a survivor of traumatic brain injury (TBI) who was left with a 7th grade reading level after two rear-end vehicle accidents.
By setting a goal and doing the slow, arduous work, I managed to write a book, knowing it would help in my recovery. It took me nearly seven years to self-publish my book. Meeting me now, you would not know how far I’ve come. I am of Japanese descent and chose to write about my heritage.
Being a grandparent is one of life’s biggest joys. I did not fully understand why my friends would be ‘head-over-heels’ when they spoke of their grandchildren. Now… I understand, and I am the same way!
When my first grandchild, Kaiya, was born it did and still warms my heart and brings so much joy. She is definitely a ‘first born;’ tenacious, self-starter, high achiever, and keeps me on my toes. She possesses qualities of a samurai; courage, integrity, honesty, and honor. I am reminded of my samurai heritage, and treat her individually as a ‘samurai in training’ when interacting with her. She definitely walks down the straight and narrow path.
She considers her actions, how it affects her younger siblings, and is a wonderful ‘big sister.’ In kindergarten, her school work was of utmost importance, and we read and do homework together, and enjoy the learning process. She enjoys whittling and discovering the woods with her grandfather. We enjoy doing cooking, dress up, and crafts together.
