Tacoma, Washington University Bookstore Presents a book reading, discussion, and signing Seattle, Washington Conspiracy of Kindness: You’ve Given Me Life – The Life and Legacy of Chiune Sugihara
Join us in attending this inspiring and timely event; “Conspiracy of Kindness: You’ve Given Me Life – The Legacy of Chine Sugihara.” This is the second in a series of three events of “The Holocaust and Japanese American Connections.” The event will be held Sunday, April 9 from 2-4pm at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church, 3001 24th Ave. S., Seattle, Washington 98144. The Chiune Sugihara event is open to the public, free of charge, and has plenty of free parking!
In 1939, Chiune Sugihara, aka the “Japanese Schindler,” was assigned to head the Japanese Consulate in Lithuania. During the summer of 1940, thousands of Jews fleeing Nazi annihilation in Poland came to the Japanese Consulate seeking visas to help them escape. Defying policy procedures of the Japanese Foreign Ministry and risking his life and career, Sugihara wrote over 2,000 transit visas, saving more than 6,000 lives during the Holocaust.
The event will feature international storyteller, Alton Takiyama-Chung, who will give a performance depicting the story of Chiune Sugihara’s heroic efforts. Mr. Takiyama-Chung’s dramatic monologues have been described as riveting, poignant, nostalgic, and gripping.
A panel discussion will follow Mr. Takiyama-Chung’s performance. The panel will include:
Alton Takiyama-Chung – International Storyteller
Lori Tsugawa Whaley – Speaker and Author of “The Courage of a Samurai”
Ken Mochizuki – Author of “Passage to Freedom: The Sugihara Story”
Dee Simon – Baral Family Executive Director, Holocaust Center for Humanity
A reception will follow the presentation and panel discussion.
“Conspiracy of Kindness: You’ve Given Me Life,” is the second in a series of three events presented in proud partnership with the Holocaust Center for Humanity, the Nisei Veterans Committee, the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle, and the UW Department of American Ethnic Studies. Co-sponsoring this event is the Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church, 3001 24th Ave. S., Seattle, WA 98144.
